Dark days in Germany

The weather was nice büt this was another black day for team Aurora… The new HCCI engine was moünted düring the night, büt we were not able to solve an electrical problem to get it rünning in time for the last race. This is really ünfortünate since we believe that we had a good shot at winning the Eco-Friendly Award, büt to do so, one müst finish the race… Bümmer. After the tears have dried we will püll oürselfs together and head for oür hostel for some Bier, Würst ünd apfelstrüdel! It’s time to load oür trück and to get ready to leave Eüro Speedway Laüsitz. Aüf Wiedersehen. Tschüss.

Captains log, 2009-05-06

After a long road trip from Stockholm to Dresden we finally arrived at Radeboule, our home for the coming week. On Tuesday afternoon we got our garage at Eurospeedway raceway and started to unload our stuff from the truck. As soon as most of the things were in place we started to work on the car. For our part that was to set up the equipment just as we had it back in Stockholm to be able to overlook the damages from the transport.

When everything was in place we started our drivers and the fireworks begun. Three pretty expensive electrical components popped inside our boxes and made it sound a bit like home made popcorn. The spirit couldn’t have been lower. Even worse, we only had five of those in spare so if it would happen again, well… Our chances to succeed in the contest would be minimal. The setback forced us to find out what had gone wrong and we stayed in the garage until 3 am the next morning. At that time we had almost got back the performance and settings that we had the last time the system worked, which was 24h earlier, in Sweden. On the way back to the hostel, traveling at 150 km/h on a pitch black autobahn, one of our minivans lost track and went for an involuntary seizing back and forth between Dresden and Berlin.

After a good 3h sleep we had breakfast at the hostel and went back to the track. Today we have kept testing the system and we were finally satisfied enough to mount it into the chassis along with the driveline. We are still hesitating on which combustion engine to use so we have prepared the system for both the HCCI and the regular Honda. The aim for today was to get the car through the technical inspection but a number of small setbacks and fixes forced us to postpone it until tomorrow. For example we discovered the excellent feature that makes our data communication fail whenever we use the horn. Very Interesting… Hope for better luck tomorrow.

Cold and wet in Germany

It’s pretty cold and rainy down here in Germany as you can see, should have taken a warmer jacket but we got coffee so I’ll live. We got here Monday night and went up to EuroSpeedway Lausitz on Tuesday. It’s pretty cool to be here. It fun to see the different teams and we have spoken to one of the teams from Chalmers that stays next to us.

Aurora is unpacked and people have been working hard, well, mainly the people from Mechatronics and Machine Design. We had some fixing to do with the door that for some reason didn’t want to fit the car any longer. With magnets many things can be fixed, you can see Robert working in Aurora in the picture below. The latest update is that Aurora has been out for a tiny test run of the breaks. Keep your fingers crossed that they will work for the technical inspection that she will have to pass later on.

The people from light weight structures actually had some time to play tourists and went into Dresden for a couple of hours. That was much fun and it is a pretty town that does deserve more than a 3 hrs run through it. Maybe some other day.

Now we are leaving a rainy Stockholm and heading for Germany! We have a long car ride in front of us, yawn. But the competition is waiting for us. Wish us luck!

Bio-Chair

The chair is manufactured based on the chair from old car Spiros, but the focus is mainly on keeping the weight down and use hemp as fabric. The chair was constructed by cutting one piece of fabric, sew the edges and fold it to make room for an aluminium frame. The frame was made of one tube of aluminium that was bent four times. The tube was then drilled to be able to fit it in the car. As seen in the picture the result could be a lot better but it was done in a haste and with a broken sewing machine so with that I think it came out quite well.
